A dental implant is a surgically placed artificial (often titanium) root. This artificial root integrates with the jaw bone and is used as an anchor for a metal and ceramic crown replacing the missing tooth. A dental implant is very stable, durable, and is the best alternative to your own tooth. Dental implant is a stand alone fixture, unlike dental bridges, which require reduction of the neighboring teeth.  That is a great advantage which makes it easy for you to clean with brushing and flossing.

Dental implants are often placed in two stages, the surgical phase and the restorative phase.   In the surgical phase we place the anchor in the jaw bone for few months.  In the restorative phase, we restore the dental implant with a crown attached to the dental implant.

Dental implants are not for everyone.  People with certain medical and dental conditions such as advanced diabetes, poor oral hygiene, and even smoking may not be good candidate for dental implants.

Getting your teeth fixed isn’t what it used to be. For example, x-rays take just a few seconds to develop and require very low levels of radiation. Natural-looking ceramics have replaced mercury and other toxic metals in fillings and crowns. And now there’s CEREC. This breakthrough technology combines all of these innovations and significantly simplifies and shortens the entire process.

How Does CEREC Work?

CEREC combines computer aided design and manufacturing, incorporating a camera, computer, and milling machine. The first step is for the dentist to prepare your tooth and take an accurate picture of it with a special camera. This photo then appears on a computer screen, and the dentist digitally designs your restoration. The computer sends the digital design to a milling unit to create the restoration while you wait. But don’t expect your wait to last long.  In some cases in as few as 15 minutes, the filling or crown is ready, and the dentist bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth.

What does this innovation mean for a patient?

A CEREC filling not only looks good, it is anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Even though it takes minutes to create, it will last for years. In the case of crowns, dentists no longer need to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second visit has been eliminated. CEREC has more than 20 years of clinical research behind it. The restorations have been proven precise, safe, and effective.
